Christmas Stockings Hanging over Fireplace

In less than four days the main Christmas holiday will be upon us, and already I have seen, to a great extent that this is still the season for “caring and sharing” even though the sharing portion might be a bit shortened this year by elections campaigns and that several countries suffering from extremely weakened economies.

Still, for the most part, there are several individuals, groups and organisations that continue to make the effort to ensure, especially, the less fortunate groups among us are given an opportunity to enjoy some of those things they would not have had access to during the rest of the year. I pray that the authorities and members of the general public seek to find ways in which they might be able to do more to assist those in the country who might not be able to assist themselves.

From caring and sharing to peace on earth and goodwill to all men, the lessons are there to be learnt. We do well at Christmas and possibly another time or two during the year but, for the most part, there is much to be desired and this holiday season should remind each of us of this and get us to move accordingly.

Merry Christmas

This Christmas many of us are focused on celebrating and exchanging gifts but we should not forget to give thanks for the best gift of all.

The gifts of vast areas of pristine rainforest and green-topped mountains generously sprinkled with exotic rivers, streams and waterfalls.

No one in Dominica, even those who live in the heart of Roseau (Capital), is ever more than a few minutes away from up-spoilt nature.

Dominica does not have the sprawling white sand beaches of other Caribbean islands. However, in most places here the water’s edge is not overrun by commercial activities, giving us the very special gift of a fresh, peaceful and private seaside ambiance.

Other countries have similar natural attractions, but they’re usually in far-off regions. Our gift is that our nature sites are concentrated in a relatively small area, making them unusually accessible to residents and visitors. Almost without exception, our natural wonders are never more than a few hours away.

Let’s keep these gifts in mind when we go to church at Christmas to give our Creator His due. We must remember these gifts as we join with our families, friends and neighbours to eat our Christmas treats, and enjoy the holidays.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

There is an ongoing discussion over at BBC Caribbean on whether or not the OECS should in Venezuela at member state. One former Caribbean diplomat is urging the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to say no to a membership request by Venezuela.

According to Sir Ron Sanders, former Antigua Ambassador, says it would be unwise for the OECS to bring Venezuela into their group.

Len Ishmael, who is the OECS Director General, confirmed recently that the application was discussed at a meeting in Montserrat -but she said decision makers within the sub-region were yet to determine whether membership should be granted.

Former Antigua Ambassador, Sir Ron Sanders is the only one against the idea – Dr Ishmael also declined to say whether the request was likely to be viewed favourably by OECS leaders, but said the region has enjoyed strong relations with the South American nation.

Sir Ron outlined his misgivings in an interview with BBC Caribbean – Listen to Sir Ron Sanders

As we all know Dominica have benefited significantly since becoming a member of The Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) trade agreement.

Please, I’m curious to hear what you think – Should the OECS include Venezuela? Share your views with readers in the comments.
