The Sisserou Parrot, or Amazon Imperialis can be seen only in the tropical rain forest of Dominica.
A large population of these magnificent birds live on the eastern and north-eastern slopes of the Morne Diablotin.
At present, bird lovers can come across the Sisserou in two of Dominica’s national parks: The Morne Diablotin National Park and Morne Trois Pitons National Park; there is also small Parrot Reservation at the Botanical Gardens in Roseau.
The Sisserou Parrot is protected under Dominica laws; and they’re one of world’s endangered species of birds. The Sisserou is the largest of the 27 species of Amazon parrots in the world, reaching about 50 centimeters in length, and lives about 70-80 years – often lives longer than their owners. One other interesting feature about Sisserou parrots; they are monogamous. Once a couple, they stay committed to each other until the end of life, even if one partner dies. The other will never mate with another parrot.
Sisserou Parrots are one of Dominica’s National pride, and they’ve been given a special place in islands cultural heritage:
- Often Dominica is referred in the songs and poetry as “Land of the Sisserou†or “Our Sisserou Landâ€.
- Dominica’s Coat-of-Arms portrays a couple of Sisserou Parrots, and the national bird is also depicted on the Dominica flag as a symbol of the island identity, recognizing history and the traditions of Dominican people.
- The nations second highest award is know as the Sisserou Award.
- The symbol of Sisserou bird is often featured in the Carnival costumes. In 2010, one of the Carnival Queen contestants showcased a beautiful Carnival Costume, dedicated to Dominica and Sisserou Parrot.
- Often the Sisserou is mentioned in the Calypsos, folk songs, poems and Dominican tales.
- There are many local companies and organizations, sport clubs and cultural groups, named after Sisserou. This song was performed by musical cultural group “Sisserou Singers†at the Literary Festival in last year…Enjoy!
