Purely Dominica

My wife Ruth and I had a wonderful dinner at The Tamarind Tree Hotel. And, the price was moderate – we skipped the starter but had entrees and desserts for EC$130. That was with excellent service too.

The hotel’s restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Normally it serves a table d’hôte dinner to its guests only, so reservations are a must. If the hotel isn’t full, you’ll usually be able to be seated. The phone number is 449-7395.

Moreover, the chef willingly makes accommodations. I have to eat heart-healthy and the menu for the night we chose was for steak. But they made an excellent tuna with Creole sauce for me and a chicken dinner for my wife. We saw two other couples – hotel guests, we presumed – dining, and they appeared to be equally pleased as we were.

There are beaches a 3-minute walk and a 7-minute walk from the restaurant, which is perched on a 100 foot cliff above the Caribbean. One can swim t either beach, or at the hotel’s pool (gratis to guests and diners) and then have a drink while sunset-watching before dining. The 7-minute walk beach belongs to the East Carib Dive Center (449-6575) which also has a bar/restaurant that serves the hotel’s guests on Tuesdays. We didn’t sample it, but it looked nice. They graciously permitted us to bathe and use the shower and changing room there before dinner.

The hotel’s location is equally convenient to Roseau and Portsmouth, lying about halfway between the two towns just south of Salisbury. We found the drive worthwhile.
