Purely Dominica

Purely Dominica

My nickname in my home village of Calibishie is “The Scientist”. I’m unsure of its origin. Is it because I have taught some science experiments to some local schoolchildren, which they then did in their class for credit? Is it because I’ve set up a telescope and showed people the moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus or features such as mountains on the moon? Or is it because I will patiently explain evolution to anyone who wishes to listen and learn?

Until I retire to Dominica next year (I can hardly wait – I’m facing my last New England winter!) I must deal with Americans who claim to have great bible knowledge and who think (in error) that (a) America has an established religion, and (b) there is a religious test to hold office.

So, I tell those people – who I’m tired of trying to correct, because they seem to inhabit a separate reality – to take the quizzes at Freedom From Religion Foundation freethought quizzes.

You may find them fun, and surprising. How much do you really know about what the bible says? And if you are an American or plan to go and live there, how much do you know about American church/state separation?
